Other Areas of Adult Social Care you can work in

There are many other areas of adult social care you can work in from occupational therapists to business support. Please see below the areas you could work in!

Community Occupational Therapists (OT)

The Community Occupational Therapy Team supports adults in the Milton Keynes Area who have long term physical disabilities. As part of their role Occupational Therapists (OTs) go out to individuals’ homes to conduct an assessment to see what can be provided to support the persons independence, this may be information and advice about techniques and the home layout, or could be the provision of equipment or support with re-housing.

The Access Team is the ‘front door’ into Adult Social Care. The customer liaison officers (CLO’S) take calls and referrals from the public and professionals in the community for individuals who would have an adult social care need. CLO’s will make outgoing calls to ensure they have collected as much detail and information as possible for the team.
CLO’s have excellent communication skills and a broad range of knowledge on professional, voluntary and private services to accurately signpost people within the community and promotetheir independence and wellbeing. Alongside CLO’s the Access Team also have support workers. Please refer to support worker section for more information on this!

Business Support

The business support role is varied role which is vital for all areas of adult social care. This role could be based within day services or based within the Civic Offices! Some of the roles completed by business support assistants are taking minutes from meeting and diary management and organisation of meetings. They also manage invoices for supplier’s and service users! They are also focused on delivering an efficient and customer focused service by processing and responding to communication, message taking and actively inputting data into information systems, databases and spreadsheets. If based in the day services you will also need to sign people into the service and ensure whom they are here to visit.

Personal Assistant Register

The Personal assistant register is a hub, which provides a register of personal assistants who work in the Milton Keynes area. The aim of the register is to help adults who need care and support find a personal assistant, which is funded through direct payments from the council or are privately
funded. Personal Assistants work directly for the person they are supporting. A rewarding job working with individuals with care and support needs enabling them to live the life they choose.

Shared Lives

Shared Lives services are designed to support adults with care and support needs. This
service is available to all Adult Social Care service users. The scheme matches people with an
approved Shared Lives Carer. The carers share their regular family and community life with
the adult to provide the help they need, this can include social and recreational activities,
washing and dressing and preparing food. The scheme is dedicated to families and
communities contributing to the well-being of people with support needs, and for those
people to be active, valued citizens. It focuses on enabling people with a disability to
experience and build valuable relationships with others.

"I have been working in the council as a business support assistant for nearly a year now; and I can honestly say it’s the best corporate role I’ve had in my 9 years in the work force. We are responsible for administrative duties such as minute-taking, completing forms, handling spreadsheets, and directing calls. My team are really supportive and the department is friendly; we are always making each other laugh. It’s really rewarding knowing that your work contributes to organising the care and support of people in the community.”
